I’m A Changed Man - Nigeria's Hushpuppi Vows to Pay Back Millions
Convicted fraudster Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, has pledged to make full restitution as he expressed regrets and apologies for his actions in a letter he sent to the judge, ahead of his sentencing in November.
Hushpuppi is awaiting sentencing by a United States court.
He apologised to the victims of his crimes, law enforcement agencies, U.S. government's lawyers, and the judge handling his case. He expressed his willingness to pay full restitution of U.S.$1.7 million to all victims including those from whom he claimed not to have derived any gain.
Hushpuppi participated in scams that resulted in losses of U.S.$24 million to the victims. He was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 alongside 12 other people who were part of the scam. The Dubai police later handed them over to the FBI in the U.S., where he was arraigned on charges of conspiracy to launder money, among others.
In August 2021, U.S. film company, Will Packer Productions, and Nigeria's Mo Abudu's EbonyLife Studios acquired rights to make a movie based on Bloomberg's article about Abbas, titled The Fall of the Billionaire Gucci Master.
