1.4 Million Nigerians Die Because Too Few Handwashing Stations

The Executive Director of Africa Youth Growth Foundation (AYGR), Dr Arome Salifu, has said that 1.4 million Nigerians are killed by diseases traceable to inadequate handwash facilities. Salifu made this announcement during an event at Government Day Secondary School in Bwari, Abuja, in honour of Global Handwashing Day.

Salifu explained that the aim of the event was to engage students with interactive activities, such as handwashing rations, games, competitions, and educational sessions. He also said that AYGR would be developing informative and easy-to-understand educational content on the importance of handwashing, when and how to wash hands, and the benefits of proper hygiene.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that unsafe hand hygiene is responsible for 394,000 deaths from diarrhoea and 356,000 deaths from acute respiratory infections (ARIs).
