Ghana to test 8,000 police officers for coronavirus

More than 8,000 police officers deployed to enforce a lockdown in some parts of Ghana are being tested for coronavirus.

The lockdown, which lasted for three weeks, was eased by President Akufo-Addo on Monday.

But schools remain closed, a ban on public gatherings is still in force and the country’s borders have not reopened.

In total more than 30,000 members of the security forces were deployed nationwide to enforce the restrictions.

The officers to be tested were on duty in the coronavirus hot spots.

Around 800 people have been arrested for violating coronavirus restrictions and are facing prosecution. 

The West African nation has recorded 1,154 cases of Covid-19, including nine deaths.
