Ghanaian minister fires gun at voter registration centre

Ghanaian minister of special development initiatives Hawa Koomson has admitted to firing shots at a voter registration centre in her constituency on Monday "to protect herself".

She told local TV channel Adom News that she fired "warning shots" because "there were no police around".

The minister said she went to the centre after getting word that people from outside the constituency were ferried to register there as voters.

Moments earlier a group of armed men had stormed the premises and torched motorcycles, according to local media reports.

The electoral commission has indefinitely suspended voter registration at the centre.

Ghana is scheduled to hold general elections in December. President Nana Akufo-Addo will be seeking re-election.
