Liberian doctor donates medical equipment to help China fight coronavirus
Dr Zhai Yu, a Chinese national who runs a clinic in Liberia’s capital of Monrovia, is donating face masks and other protective materials to hospitals in China, where an outbreak of coronavirus has killed over 1,100 people.
Dr Zhai, who is from Hubei province near Beijing, has been living Liberia for 12 years.
She told BBC News that she was donating the equipment “because our people in China have suffered too much; they are between life and death”.
So far she has packed cartons containing 7,000 face masks and 600 pieces of protective clothing. They will be sent to affected areas in China, including the city of Wuhan - the suspected origin of the disease.
The doctor imported the medical gear to Liberia six years ago, in the wake of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Dr Zhai said she was not worried about the possible spread of coronavirus to Liberia.
