Militants abduct DR Congo farmers

By Mary Harper

Islamist fighters in eastern Congo are reported to have abducted several farmers in the region of Beni in North Kivu province.

Local media said members of the Allied Democratic Forces also occupied a church. People have fled the area.

The militants have been active in the forests of Mutweyi and Kalalangwe in the past month, invading villages.

People say insecurity is preventing them from moving around and tending their fields.

They say they have been abandoned by the military, which does not have a presence in the area.
