Niger: 20 killed in stampede for aid

At least twenty people have been killed and ten injured while queueing for aid in a town in south-eastern Niger.

Refugees from neighbouring Nigeria, including many women and children, were waiting for food and money in the town of Diffa when the crush happened.

The aid was being provided by the governor of Nigeria’s Borno state, who was visiting refugee camps in the area.

The surrounding region is home to about 120,000 refugees, who have been displaced by the years of violence wrought by Boko Haram in north-eastern Nigeria.

The militant Islamist group and its offshoots have waged a brutal insurgency in Nigeria since 2009.
