Nigerian church set ablaze over missing child

Protesters in Azure city, south-west Nigeria, have set a church on fire, following unconfirmed reports that the body of a missing one-year-old had been found buried by the alter.

Witnesses said police officers shot and wounded two protestors while trying to disperse the crowd. Police have confirmed that one of their officers was killed.

The exact circumstances of the child’s disappearance are unclear. He is suspected to have gone missing last month while attending the church with his mother, Modupe Kolawole. She suspects foul play.

The church’s founder, Alfa Babatunder, was arrested last week by Nigeria’s secret police in connection with the boy’s disappearance. He is yet to comment publicly.

So far no reports have confirmed that the boy’s body has been found.
