Nigerian Stab Victim Dies After Hospital “Refuses Treatment”

A young Nigerian woman has died after suffering stab wounds to her neck after staff at Jolad Hospital in Lagos reportedly refused to treat her because she could not produce a police crime report.

Moradeun Balogun was attacked on her way home from work by robbers who stole her laptop.

Ms Balogun’s sister, Molade Balogun, took to Twitter to vent her outrage, writing “Nigeria failed Moradeun.  A country with so much potential but yet misguided by value.

“Killing for a laptop, not treating because of lack of paper and ink.  This land had hope before it was called NIGERIA”.

Jolad Hospital, where Ms Balogun was rushed by bystanders who witnessed the attack, have vehemently denied all accusations of negligence.

Funso Oladipo, chief medical director at the hospital, confirmed the hospital received the patient, but said she needed specialised treatment that they did not have the facilities for.

“We didn’t move her into the hospital.  We immediately moved her to Gbagada after we realised that we cannot offer the required treatment and those who brought her had abandoned her with us”, he said.

An online campaign launched by Molade Balogun using the hashtag #JusticeForMoradeun has received widespread support amongst Nigerians, seeking to hold those they see responsible to account.
