Nigerian woman burns herself to death
By Mansur Abubakar
Police in Nigeria's northern city of Kano say they are investigating the circumstances that led to the self-immolation of a 28-year-old housewife.
Police spokesman Abdullahi Haruna told the BBC that officers rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call and found the woman severely burnt in her room.
She was confirmed dead at the hospital where she was taken.
Neighbours in central Kano, where the incident happened, told the BBC that the husband of the deceased had recently taken a second wife and that the two women did not get along well.
"On Wednesday morning after prayers, the husband came out shouting that we should come and help him that his wife had burned herself, it was a terrible sight," one eye-witness said.
The husband has been taken in by the police.
