Nightly curfew announced in Guinea

By Alhassan Sillah

Guinea is the latest African nation to declare a nightly curfew amid the coronavirus pandemic, in addition to its existing state of emergency.

President Alpha Condé made the announcement on state radio and television on Monday, telling citizens they must stay at indoors from 21:00 local time (21:00 GMT).

In other measures the capital city, Conakry, has been declared off-limits to the rest of the country.

No travel is permitted into or out of Conakry without the express permission of the health minister.

Guinea currently has 33 cases of coronavirus. News of restrictions on movement to halt the spread of the virus comes at a time of political unrest in the country.

More than 30 people were killed in months of protests ahead of a controversial constitutional referendum on 22 March.

The opposition has rejected the official result, that saw President Condé's side win 91.59% of the vote, which paves the way for him to stay in power beyond his mandate.
