Senegal Edge Hosts Algeria to Win African Champs 2022

The hopes of Algeria's Desert Foxes of winning the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on home soil, were crushed in heartbreaking fashion - losing 5-4 on penalties to Senegal's Lions of Teranga in a tense final on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers in front of over 39,000 spectators.

Algeria's Eddine Mrezigue, 22, was named Player of the Tournament, while Aymen Mahious, 25, received the Golden Boot award.

In the two semi-final matches held on January 31, Ayem Mahious scored two goals as Algeria hammered Niger 5-0, while Papa Diallo scored the lone goal as Senegal edged Madagascar 1-0.

Niger and Madagascar met each other on Friday February 3, with Madagascar the victor in the playoff for third place.

The tournament was delayed by several months due to Covid-19 restrictions.
