Guinea: Condé's party wins parliamentary elections

The Rally of the Guinean People - the political party of President Alpha Condé - has won more than two-thirds of the seats in last month’s parliamentary elections, which opposition parties boycotted.

The government also declared victory in a referendum held the same day, which changes the constitution to allow Mr Condé to seek a third term in office.

The new constitution means that the time Mr Condé has already served does not count. His second term comes to an end in December.

President Condé has argued that constitutional changes are needed to implement social reforms, especially to benefit women.

The prospect of constitutional change has provoked months of unrest in Guinea, leading to several dozen deaths.
