Akufo-Addo to run for second term
Ghana’s governing political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has endorsed President Nana Akufo-Addo as their candidate in the upcoming 2020 presidential election.
Vice President Dr Muhammudu Bawumia is to be his running mate in an exact mirroring of the 2016 presidential race when the pair successfully ran for office.
The NPP have made assurances that President Akufo-Adda has always been their preferred candidate within the party for this year’s election, and that he has had their unwavering support.
In a press statement, the Party announced, "President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was the sole candidate for the NPP presidential slot. But for the coronavirus pandemic, he would have been acclaimed before a national congress of the party," it added.
President Akufo-Addo has been widely praised for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic: the country entered a nationwide lockdown quickly, controlling the spread of the virus, and now is in the process of easing restrictions on movement and public gatherings.
Ghana’s elections are due to be held on 7th December 2020.
