Ambazonian President Gets Life Sentence
The President of Ambazonia, Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe has been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonments.
The leader of the separatist and nine of his followers have been convicted of charges including terrorism and secession and have also been fined £286 million. The charge of secession carries a death penalty.
Ayuk Tabe was arrested along with 46 other separatists in a hotel in Abuja, reportedly by Nigerian special forces. The men were handed over to the Cameroonian government in a move that has been deemed illegal by the Nigerian courts.
Peaceful protests advocating for more rights in Southern Cameroon in 2007 were violently repressed by the government and the situation has degenerated to an armed conflict that has seen thousands displaced both internally and in neighbouring Nigeria. International organizations also put the number of people killed at three thousand.
