Arrest warrant for Ivory Coast presidential candidate
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Guillaume Soro, the ex-prime minister of Ivory Coast and former rebel leader who intends to run in next year’s presidential election.
Public prosecutor Richard Adou announced on state television that the warrant for Soro’s arrest had been issued for alleged breaches of state security, money laundering and receiving stolen public resources.
Mr Soro was due to return to Ivory Coast on Monday, after several months abroad. Instead his plane touched down in Ghana. He denies the allegations against him.
The 47-year old’s decision to run for office has riled President Alassane Ouattara, who may be seeking re-election himself. The President and Mr Soro had been long-time allies until a falling out earlier this year.
Many Ivorians are worried about next year’s election as previous political crises dragged the country into a civil war that only ended in 2004. Already Mr Soro’s supporters have been dispersed by police in Abidjan using tear gas.
