Former Niger President Mamadou Tandja dies at 82

The former President of Niger, Mamadou Tandja, has died at the age of 82.

He governed from 1999 to 2010 when he was overthrown in a coup after trying to stay in power beyond a two-term limit.

He was then jailed after being accused of corruption, but was released a year later when all charges against him were dropped.
