Liberia To Set Date For Delayed By-Elections

The National Elections Commission in Liberia is expected to announce a new date for by-elections for the vacant Montserrado County Senatorial seat and the District No. 15 legislative seat.

The ballot has been subject to delay given that the materials required to hold the vote, including the ballot papers, were yet to arrive in the country. According to local news outlet FrontPageAfrica the materials arrived at Roberts International Airport on July 18.

The elections were previously planned for July 2. However, delays to the disbursement of the necessary funds to cover the costs of materials appear to have been a factor as the government faces budgetary pressures.

According to the Constitution by-elections must be held within 90 days of a vacancy in the legislature caused by death, resignation or expulsion.

The vacancies emerged after representative Adolph Lawrence died in a car accident in March and Senator Geraldine Doe-Sheriff died following illness.
