Liberian civil servants end national strike
Liberia’s Civil Service Union today called an end to the nationwide strike over pay and benefits that had started on Monday. The union represents 73,000 lower-level government employees, including teachers.
Union leader Moibah Johnson explained that the workers were urged to make an agreement with the government after consultations with religious officials and senior civil servants. Government employees are expected to return to work this week as negotiations continue.
Beginning on Monday, the strike was broadly popular with civil servants across Liberia. Many had not been paid for several months and the strike prompted the government to finally pay out salaries for October.
