Nigeria: Buhari appoints former UN official as chief of staff

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed former diplomat Ibrahim Gambari as his new chief of staff.

Mr Gambari was a senior official at the United Nations and also previously served in President Buhari’s military government in the 1980s.

He takes over from Abba Kyari, who died last month from Covid-19.

Although Gambari has a wealth of experience, concerns have been raised that the 75-year-old is too old for the position.

Critics of President Buhari, 77, also say that his advanced age and frail health have had a direct impact on the quality of leadership in Nigeria.
