Nigeria Detains Revolution Now Organiser

The courts in Nigeria have approved the 45-day detention of “Revolution Now” organizer Omoyele Sowore.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had requested a 90-day detention of the Sahara Reporters publisher and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC).

Sowore was arrested at last weekend and could face terrorism charges relating to his involvement in recent protests that were labelled ‘Days of Rage’. On Monday security forces fired teargas at protestors in Lagos after protestors took to the street despite the demonstration having been outlawed by the police.

Confirming the arrest the country’s Department of State Services (DSS) earlier stated that Mr Sowore had been arrested “for threatening public safety, peaceful co-existence and social harmony in the country.”

Public Relations Officer of the DSS, Mr. Peter Afunanya, has stated  “Nigeria is not a banana republic and cannot suddenly be made one. So, the DSS will not just sit by and watch individuals or groups wanting to rise and threaten the peace and unity of the country.”
