Nigeria ex-governor detained after handing over power

The former governor of Nigeria's Anambra state was arrested on Thursday soon after he had handed over office to his successor.

Willie Obiano was arrested by officers from Nigeria’s anti corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Local media outlets report that he was arrested at an airport in Lagos city while attempting to flee the country.

The agency's spokesperson told the BBC that Mr Obiano was being held for questioning, but did not elaborate what he was being investigated for.

It is common for former governors to be arrested after they have left office to face prosecution for corruption - mostly money laundering.
