Nigeria: Lagos governor considering second lockdown

The governor of Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, has warned that lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus could be reinstated if citizens continue to flout social distancing rules.

On Twitter, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu posted that it was disappointing to see crowds of people at banks and markets across Lagos State, ignoring the ban on public gatherings.

“Getting rid of #Covid-19 in our state must be a collective responsibility. It is not something government can do alone. We must all do our part,” he wrote.

On Monday, Nigeria began to ease its restrictions, following a five-week lockdown in Lagos and the country’s capital Abuja.

Nigeria has confirmed over 4,000 cases of the coronavirus, as well as 117 deaths.

Lagos has been hit particularly hard and the daily increase in recorded cases has doubled in the past few days.
