Nigeria Marks Democracy Day, President Tinubu Hails Abiola
In his Democracy Day speech, President Bola Tinubu hailed Moshood Abiola (MKO), the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election. He commended Abiola for his refusal to surrender his mandate, which ultimately led to his death in military detention. He acknowledged Abiola's sacrifice and martyrdom as the custodian of the annulled mandate, emphasising his unwavering defense of democratic ideals.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as Nigeria's Democracy Day and posthumously awarded Nigeria's highest honour to Abiola.
Tinubu acknowledged the hardship being faced by Nigerians in the aftermath of the fuel subsidy removal, saying his administration will "reward their sacrifices with massive investment in transportation infrastructure, education, regular power supply, healthcare, and other public utilities" that will improve their quality of life. The subsidy had long been seen by many Nigerians as one of the few perks they received from the government, but it was also a huge drain on public finances.
The president at his inauguration on May 29, 2023, announced the removal of the subsidy on petrol. This led to a nationwide price increase.
