Nigerian Politician's Identity Theft Woes Unfold at UK Airport
Peter Obi, who ran as a presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the February 25 election, was detained at a London airport on April 7, 2023, over alleged identity theft.
Obi had traveled to London to celebrate Easter when he was accosted by immigration officials and handed a detention note. He was questioned for a long time, and it was revealed that someone had been impersonating him in London, committing crimes in his name.
The situation was resolved with the intervention of Nigerians who inquired about the delay. However, the implications of the offense are serious as Obi could be implicated in forbidden acts and framed, causing embarrassment to him, his family, his party, and Nigeria.
The impersonator is still at large.
