Nigerian Presidential Candidate Arrested
Presidential candidate Omowole Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC) was arrested this weekend.
Confirming the arrest the country’s Department of State Services (DSS) said that Mr Sowore had been arrested “for threatening public safety, peaceful co-existence and social harmony in the country.”
His detention came ahead of planned protests by the group ‘Revolution Now’ on Monday.
On Sunday Public Relations Officer of the DSS, Mr. Peter Afunanya, stated “Nigeria is not a banana republic and cannot suddenly be made one. So, the DSS will not just sit by and watch individuals or groups wanting to rise and threaten the peace and unity of the country.”
On Monday security forces fired teargas at protestors in Lagos after protestors took to the street despite the demonstration having been outlawed by the police.
