Togo court confirms president’s election win

Togo’s Constitutional Court has issued its final ruling that President Faure Gnassingbé won last month’s elections with 71% of the vote.

The initial result of the election, which was held on 22nd February, was contested by President Gnassingbé’s main opponent, Agbéyomé Kodjo.

Mr Kodjo issued allegations of widespread fraud after winning just 18% of the vote. The former prime minister accused authorities of setting up fake polling stations, ballot stuffing, and getting people to cast multiple votes in favour of Mr Gnassingbé.

President Gnassingbé has led Togo since 2015, taking over from his late father Gnassingbé Eyadema, who ruled for 38 years.
