Benin Invests In Modernizing Port
The modernization of Benin’s port in Cotonou is underway, with a planned government investment of US$500 million from 2020.
The 300-hectare transit port, which is managed by the Cotonou Port Authority, already contributes over 60 per cent of gross domestic product. However, it has struggled with long waiting times.
The management and modernization of the port was entrusted to the Port of Antwerp International (PAI), a subsidiary of the Antwerp Port Authority in December 2017. In 2018 the facility recorded an increased turnover of 16.35%.
The port, which handles an annual freight volume of around 12 million tons, faces stiff competition in the region from Tema, Lome and Abidjan ports.
