Sierra Leone Cancels Mining Licenses

The Government of Sierra Leone has cancelled or suspended several mining licenses in the country. The move follows a review of all mining contracts and the country’s policy for the sector.

Companies affected include China’s Shandong Iron and Steel and Gerald Group. The former is already challenging the decision in the courts.

Gerald Group has since confirmed that it stopped production at Marampa mine on July 3 following a temporary suspension order from the recently appointed Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources Foday Rado Yokie.
