Chamber Supports Mineral Revenue Management Act

The Chamber of Mines in Ghana has called on government to pass a Mineral Revenue Management Act.

According to the group’s CEO Mr Sulemanu Koney the move would provide a boost to the sector, promote good governance and generate additional revenue.

“Most of us are unaware of specific projects funded with mineral revenue or how these funds are expended. It is in this light that we urge the government to pass a Mineral Revenue Management Act for the mining sector," Mr Koney stated while at the 2019 Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition at Perseus Mines Resettlement Community, in Ayanfuri, Central Region.

The event was endorsed by the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources and attended by the Chief Inspector of Mines and officers of the Inspectorate Division of the Chamber of Mines.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh has announced that Government is in the process of making changes to the Minerals and Mining Act designed to increase the penalties for illegal mining.

“The new law plans to explicitly criminalise any aiding and abetting of illegal mining activities… as well as the use of other equipment for mining in water bodies,” the minister stated at the Brong Ahafo Regional Ghana Journalists Association Awards this weekend.
