Equatorial Guinea donates $2m to fight coronavirus

The President of Equatorial Guinea has announced that his country will donate $2m to its “sister nation” China to help battle the outbreak of Coronavirus.

The decision was reached at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday and is intended as a show of “support and solidarity” to one of Equatorial Guinea’s largest trading partners.

Despite the West African nation’s sizeable oil assets, Equatorial Guinea’s economy is dwarfed by that of China - the second largest in the world after the US. China’s GDP is $13.6tr, compared to Equatorial Guinea’s $13.4bn.

Equatorial Guinea is Africa’s third largest oil producer, but more than half the population lives below the poverty line.

The ongoing coronavirus outbreak started in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December and has already infected over 20,000 people, killing 636.
