Lagos city to ban motorcycles
Authorities in Lagos, Nigeria’s business capital, have announced plans to ban motorcycles and tricycles from the city’s major roads.
The Lagos state government said the ban was the result of deaths and disorderliness caused by the vehicles, which are the city’s most common form of transport.
City official Gbenga Omotoso told told local media that motorcycles and tricycles will not be allowed in the state capital Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, Apapa and Eti Osa.
The ban will take effect from 1st February, from which point it will be enforced on all major highways and bridges. Once the results are assessed, it will be extended to other areas.
Many Nigerians have complained about the ban online, arguing that motorbike taxis help them beat the heavy traffic in Lagos.
