Suspected militants storm market in Burkina Faso
At least 50 people have been killed by suspected militants in an attack on a village market in Burkina Faso’s unstable northern region.
The attack in Silgadji village, in the Tongomael municipality, took place on Saturday but reports only emerged on Monday. The region has been the site of frequent attacks by jihadists in recent months.
Local reports indicate the attackers cut off communication networks to the municipality before storming the market.
State broadcaster Radio-Television du Burkina (RTB) reported on Monday that “dozens were killed” in the attack but could give not further details.
Islamist militants frequently carry out attacks in the wider Soum province, which is in the Sahel Region, as well as in the neighbouring Centre-North Region.
On 20th January, at least 36 people were killed during an attack on two villages in Centre-North’s Sanmatenga province.
