Nigerian Serviceman Promoted For Honesty

Nigerian Air Force serviceman Bashir Umar has been promoted by two ranks in reward for his honesty after he returned a lost parcel containing $41,500 in cash.

Umar discovered the parcel while on patrol at Aminu Kano International airport in Kano state. He said that returning the money was part of the values and discipline he had received from his family and in service.

President Buhari has described Umar’s actions as “uncommon, patriotic and exemplary,” encouraging Nigeria’s youth to emulate such behaviour.

He has been promoted two levels, from the rank of aircraftman to corporal, an achievement that would usually be expected to take around ten years. Umar was also awarded a letter of commendation and became the first non-commissioned officer in the history of Nigeria’s Air Force to have an aircraft detail to transport him and his parents to Abuja.
