Nigeria Marks Democracy Day

Nigeria has today marked Democracy Day with several Africa leaders coming together in the capital of Abuja.

The celebration marks the day the military handed power to an elected civilian government in 1999. It was held on May 29 until President Buhari announced a change in the date to June 12, marking the election of MKO Abiola in 1993.

Among those heads of state to attend were President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, President of Liberia George Weah, President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, President Hage Geingob of Namibia, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania, President Mahammadou Issoufou of Niger, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Idris Deby Itno of Chad, President Yoweri Museveni of Ugandam and Head of African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat.
