President Buhari Pledges To Lift 100mn Out of Poverty
Recently re-elected President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari has pledged to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.
“We can lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years,” he told the crowds as he made his first major public speech since his inauguration.
Setting out his expectations for his second term in office Buhari projected that the economy would grow by 2.7% in 2019 and stated that his government would continue to build roads, address electricity provision issues and upgrade Nigeria’s infrastructure.
“The principal interest of this administration is to consolidate on the achievements of the last four years,” Buhari stated citing achievements such as the country’s exit from recession and the disbursement of loans to farmers.
Critics of Buhari’s government have pointed to the spreading violence in northwest, northeast and central states, as well as the politicization of the anti-corruption agenda to pursue the opposition.
