Protestors Detained in Senegal

Police in Senegal have detained more than 20 protestors in the capital of Dakar after the authorities refused permission for a peaceful protest by opposition groups.

Protestors were calling for action following allegations that the brother of President Macky Sall was complicit in fraud relating to offshore gas blocks developed by BP PLC. According to the report BP agreed to pay Timis Corporation roughly $10 billion in royalty payments and that a secret payment of $250,000 had been made by Frank Timis to the president’s brother Aliou Sall. Sall has dismissed the reports and Timis has denied any wrongdoing.

Police fired tear gas at the protestors as they detained several individuals.

Prosecutors have said an investigation into the allegations will follow.
